Artist's Statement

Come with me...

I am a painter and multimedia artist living and working in North Lakes, Queensland, Australia. My art is a result of an intense sensory experience of the environment and reflects a heightened examination of the world around me. I have a strong connection to place and, having lived in three countries, I bring a huge number of experiences and observations to my works

Instead of the vivid language of writers and poets, I use colour, texture, line and form to convey a message, feeling or observation. My aim is to lead you to experience some form of truth on the subject through engagement. As I paint and create, my rich experiences and observations are woven into the works. These are both intentionally and spontaneously incorporated, to be reinterpreted by you using your own experiences, feelings and personal stories.

At times, I use vibrant colours, dynamic composition and dramatic lighting to help create a sense of drama and emotional intensity. Other times I create muted works that have quiet spaces, which are moody and dreamlike. They are always influenced by the intention of the work and the feelings and responses I hope to evoke.

In the past, my works have been more representational, focusing on form and detail, but this has shifted to creating works that are more open-ended, less obvious and more emotive. This allows the viewer freedom to interpret and experience the work in various ways. For this reason, I enjoy experimenting with different media and ‘found’ tools, and this has led to an interest in using natural art-making resources and mediums. I am increasingly expressive and adventurous in the marks I make and the colours I use. It often comes down to what I have to say. Details can mean ‘look at how beautiful this is’ and more emotive and abstract work can say ‘this is what I love or feel about this object or topic’, but they are always in response to the world around me.

Overarching all this, I create art that promotes sustainability and responsible art making, as seen in my use of repurposed and recycled materials. Therefore, my themes often focus on increasing awareness of our fragile planet.
