Collection: Ode to the Reef Collection
ODE – describes something in a personal and approving way, marked by feeling and style, a lyrical expression of praise, a tribute
Ode to the Reef is a collection of acrylic paintings where I pay tribute to the incredible beauty and importance of the reef. I take you on a journey under the surface to discover and experience a secret life hidden from view. The textural variety and sensory stimulation of this rich and diverse environment are explored and revealed. Instead of the vivid language of writers and poets, I use colour, texture, line and form to describe, interpret and explore the unique qualities of the reef. Through interesting and unusual shapes, a range of colour combinations, rich textural explorations and interesting mark making, these works will surprise and delight, encourage conversation and increase awareness of this beautiful world. The jewel-like colours and patterns are incredible to behold, and I stand in awe of this part of our planet.
My rich past and present experiences and observations are woven into these layered acrylic works. Our childhood family holidays spent at the seaside were when I first became aware of the beauty and mystery below the surface of the water. I found life underwater fascinating and surreal, and I would spend hours exploring the many plants and creatures that called it home. Fauna and flora above water are so explored and represented in art when most of the earth’s surface is actually under water, filled with such unimaginable treasures and beauty waiting to be discovered and appreciated. Seeing these landscapes first-hand can be challenging, and therefore it is important that I share the joy of its discovery and presence and highlight the importance of the incredible diversity found in our oceans. I am very aware of the changes happening to our planet and particularly to the reef environment. Many have not seen the reef’s wonders, both large and microscopic, and might never get to. I see the slow decline of the thriving rockpools we explored as children, as well as increasingly severe weather events that cause devastating destruction to the reef. It is the potential loss of these environments before they are even fully appreciated that concerns me, and the reason why I look at ways to make art that is more sustainable and responsible. I want my children and future generations to also find joy and benefit from a thriving reef environment. These works will ignite abundant interest in these hidden places by providing memorable sensory experiences, thought-provoking insights and extracting emotional responses, to create much-needed momentum in preventing the reefs' decline as well as the demise of all that depend on them before it is too late.
