Ghost is the result of my exploring different ways of applying acrylic to canvas and in the process of creating an interesting textured background for my colourful corals, the shape of the turtle was unintentionally created much to my delight! It is well known that the reef relies on the turtles to eat seagrasses which could overgrow and smother corals, and in turn turtles need the reef for protection and food. This reliance on each other is under threat however, with the turtles and corals being affected by climate change as well as pollution. Recent cyclones have resulted in the death of many turtles as well as the destruction of corals that are smashed by rocks and waves, and having a deadly impact on the reef. This painting makes us consider the ramifications of the loss of turtles and also how this loss could affect the sensitive reef environs, and vice versa.
