Wild Reef Party …or is it? This colourful artwork with its translucent layers, interesting shapes and bold colours was created using past observations and my imagination, and inspired by the impressive fluorescence seen on the reef. It reminds me of the disco days when coloured lights and ultra-violet light created crazy party vibes. But although the reef looks beautiful and magical when it glows, there is the possibility that it is a warning sign, and that the corals are actually under severe stress and at risk of bleaching. Although healthy corals naturally fluoresce, scientists are looking into the possibility that pink and purple biofluorescence could be a desperate sign that the coral is under threat and is using this last ditch manner to protect themselves from over-radiance and consequently the loss of algae, leading to bleaching. The warming oceans are thought to cause these important energy giving algae to abandon the coral and without them corals are vulnerable and cannot survive, resulting in them appearing bleached. Are we listening and taking note?
